Volleyball Wins E8 Opener Over the Gators

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks took care of business on Wednesday night, winning their Empire 8 opener in three over the visiting Russell Sage Gators.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • The Hawks controlled every aspect of the match from start to finish on Wednesday evening on their way to a 3-0 win in their Empire 8 opener against Sage.
  • Despite trading points early in the first set, the Hawks jumped out to a 12-4 lead behind Shaelyn Thornton's (Scarborough, Me.) five-point serving run.
  • Sage pushed back late in the set, getting within three, but the Hawks withstood the pressure to eventually claim the 25-21 win.
  • The Hawks turned it on in the second and third sets, holding Sage to just nine and 14 points respectively in those sets.
  • Across the three sets, the Hawks posted their second highest attack percentage with a .359, putting away 46 kills on 92 attempts.
  • Shelby Swartz (Candor, N.Y.) led the high-powered offense with 14 kills, while Staecia Silofau (Kapolei, Hawaii) chipped in 11.
  • However, Thornton turned in the most efficient performance collecting 10 kills in her 12 attempts.
  • The defense was also stellar for the Hawks with the team combining for 43 digs and 10 blocks.
  • Swartz and setter, Braelyn Hornick (Candor, N.Y.) picked up 11 digs each to lead the squad.
  • Hornick also got in on the action at the net, teaming up with Aaliyah Williams (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) for three assisted blocks.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
 
The Hawks move right into their first full weekend of conference play, starting with a 6 PM match at home against the SUNY Poly Wildcats on Friday.
