Hawks Ride Three-Goal First Quarter Past Pioneers

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks put away three goals in the first quarter and road that lead all the way to the end to defeat the Utica University Pioneers in E8 action.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 3, Utica 1
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (7-6 Overall, 5-2 Empire 8), Utica (3-11 Overall, 2-5 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Jessica Betts (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) tallied the opening goal by depositing a rebound off of the Utica keeper's pads into the left corner of the cage.
  • The offense continued to pour on shot after shot for the next nine minutes but were unable to score again until the 11:17 mark.
  • Once again it was Betts who put one away; this time with a blast off of a direct corner insert to go up 2-0.  Ashley Tricarico (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the insert pass.
  • The Hawks wasted little time in getting their third score as Danielle Hand (Queensbury, NY.) extended Hartwick's lead just over two minutes later.
  • Hand's goal was also off of a corner play where the sophomore forward took the insert, took two dribbles to the right and drove home the shot.
  • The Hawks continued to put pressure on the Pioneers in the 2nd quarter, but Utica stepped up to deny the rest of Hartwick's attempts.
  • Hartwick held on to their three-goal lead for most of the 3rd quarter despite Utica picking up some offensive momentum.
  • The Pioneers' persistence paid off in the 41st minute of play with a shot from the right side of the circle into the left corner of the cage.
  • The Hawks tightened up in the 4th quarter to preserve their 3-1 win.
  • "We had a really great start to the game getting three goals in the first quarter," said Head Coach, Erin Autera.  "We look forward to improving our consistency for a full sixty minute in our next game."
  • Finally, today's game for the field hockey squad marked the first game of the department's Mental Health Awareness week sponsored by The Hidden Opponent Club at Hartwick.
  • The Hartwick student-athletes are using this week to shine light on mental health being just as important as physical health, and to honor the lives lost as a result of lacking mental health services within athletics.
