Field Hockey Defeats Nazareth in OT

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hawks rallied back from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Golden Flyers in overtime on Saturday to pick up a critical conference victory.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Hartwick 3, Nazareth 2 (OT)
  • Location:  Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records:  Hartwick (4-5 Overall, 2-1 Empire 8), Nazareth (3-6 Overall, 2-2 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks controlled the pace of play throughout the 1st quarter, but were unable to find the cage despite getting off eight shots.
  • Hartwick continued to assert themselves throughout the 2nd quarter, but it was Nazareth who would capitalize first putting one away with just under three minutes remaining in the half.
  • The Golden Flyers carried that momentum into the 3rd quarter, picking up their second goal of the contest, slipping a shot just past the outstretched pad of the Hawks' keeper, Ava Reynolds (South Glens Falls, N.Y.).
  • Nazareth continued to hold Hartwick at bay for the remainder of the 3rd and into much of the 4th quarter.
  • However, the Hawks offense finally began to click with just under five minutes to play as Hope Angioletti (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) ripped a drive through traffic from the left side of the circle to cut Nazareth's lead in half.
  • Jess Betts (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) was credited with the assist after slipping the ball to Angioletti on her left off of the penalty corner insert.
  • With time winding down, the Hawks had their chances to find the equalizer, but were unable to connect.
  • However, Makayla Bales (Sidney, N.Y.) found the perfect time to notch her first collegiate goal when she put away a rebound off of the initial save by Nazareth's keeper with 17 seconds left on the clock.
  • With the score tied up at two all, the two squads headed into overtime.
  • The Hawks wasted little time in finding the game winner as Dani Hand (Queensbury, N.Y.) redirected a cross into the back left corner of the cage giving Hartwick the golden-goal victory just 33 seconds into the OT period.
  • "Coach Raymond and I are truly proud of the perseverance this team showed by executing when it mattered most," remarked Head Coach Erin Autera after the game.  "We look forward to honing in on our offensive execution for next week's match ups."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will look to carry this momentum into three straight Empire 8 road contests beginning with a Wednesday night dual against the Sage Gators at 6 PM.  The game will be held at the University of Albany's turf field.
