Hawks Take Down Soaring Eagles in Conference Clash

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Men's Soccer Team hosted Elmira College, looking to defend home field against the Soaring Eagles.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Elmira 0 Hartwick 3

  • Location: Elmira, N.Y.

  • Records: Elmira (3-6-3, 3-2-1 Empire 8) Hartwick (4-6-1, 2-4 Empire 8)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Hawks matched up with the Soaring Eagles for the first time since their Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship Tournament semifinal matchup last year.

  • Both teams would try to gain an early advantage over the other as they both opened with high intensity.

  • The two squads exchanged early fouls as they began to settle in and try to unravel each other's gameplans.

  • Hartwick generated the first shot of the game, coming from a wonderful entry ball from Alex Norgeot (Cohasset, Mass.), finding an elevated Hunter Bulich (Catskill, N.Y.) who headed the ball on target but was turned away by the diving Elmira keeper.

  • The Hawks earned their first corner of the game but were turned away by the Soaring Eagles, Elmira pushed their way down the pitch and responded with earning a corner of their own but the Hawks were able to clear the danger.

  • Elmira posted their first shot of the game in the 12th minute with a strike from outside the box but Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, Mass.) was able to corral the shot with ease for his first save of the day.

  • The Royal Blue and White were first to get on the board in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a Soaring Eagle foul. Kwame Amissah-Arthur (Federal Way, Wash.) took the awarded free kick on the right side of the pitch from a few yards outside the box. Amissah-Arthur struck the ball with purpose, soaring over the stretched Elmira keeper and finding the back of the net for a brilliant first goal.

  • Elmira would try to even the score up, posting their second corner of the half in the 24th minute but were turned away by the Hawks yet again.

  • The Hawks posted one more corner in the half but were unable to generate a shot on goal.

  • Elmira would test Gesamondo and the stout Hawk defense with two shots on goal and a corner in the final 15 minutes but Hartwick stood tall, coming together to keep the one goal lead, heading into the half.

  • Each team posted three corners in the first half but Elmira outshot the Hawks 4-2, Gesamondo notched three saves as the team looked to build on a solid first half.

  • The Hawks came soaring out the gates in the second half, displaying a newfound energy as they looked to build on their lead.

  • After winning a 50/50 ball, Jake Daly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was able to quickly push the ball out into the open field as it turned into a footrace between Kayden Zachgo (Warwick, N.Y.) and an Elmira defender. Zachgo was able to use his speed and inch past the defender, Kayden entered the box and slipped it past the oncoming Elmira keeper for his first collegiate goal, putting the Hawks up two in the 47th minute.

  • The physical affair would start to see officials make their presence felt as the first of six total yellow cards in the second half was called against Elmira in the 58th minute.

  • Corners in the 67th and 83rd minute by Elmira would be unsuccessful as they continued to scramble in search of an answer to stopping the Hartwick attack.

  • Elmira looked to create a chance, working their way into the box but a perfectly executed slide tackle by Daly, thwarted the attack in its tracks.

  • The Hawks displayed great team defense all game, with multiple players coming up big with individual stops and Gesamondo snagging two more saves, bringing his total to five on the day.

  • Coach Scott's squad continued to keep up the intensity, even in the final minutes as the Hawks pushed down the pitch with purpose one final time. Multiple Hawks breached the Elmira backline as Zachgo received the ball in the box with a defender all over him. Zachgo was able to maintain composure and keep possession before dishing the ball off to a lurking Hunter Bulich, who rifled one into the back of the net for the third and final score for the squad in the 89th minute.

  • Hartwick displayed great team effort on both sides of the pitch as they took down the defending Empire 8 champions in an important conference victory.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

"We've continued to keep our heads down and we've now won the last two games. It's up to us to keep being positive, but with both feet firmly on the ground. We won't be taking anything for granted as we prepare for Saturday."
