Football Outlasted by St. John Fisher in Conference Showdown

ONEONTA, N.Y. -The Hartwick football team returned to Wright Stadium on Saturday afternoon, squaring off with St. John Fisher after back-to-back battles against nationally ranked opponents in Cortland and Brockport. The Hawks faced another tall task as the visiting Cardinals entered with their best start since 2016 — and lived up to their billing, outlasting Hartwick in a hard-fought contest.

  • The Hawks posted 22 first downs, 16 through the air and seven more than the Cardinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out with momentum after an emotional overtime win in the annual Courage Bowl over Brockport, but it was the Hawks who struck first. After a defensive stop highlighted by a backfield takedown from Brennan McNeilly (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), Hartwick methodically marched down the field behind quarterback Dennis Riordan (New City, N.Y.) and running back Akil Williams (Chester, N.Y.). Riordan spread the ball to Nicholas Massaregli (Pelham, N.Y.), Kyle Trinkle (Monroe, N.Y.), and Haven Marascio (Cape Canaveral, Fla.), before finding Marascio again in the left corner of the end zone for a six-yard touchdown to put 'Wick on top early.

St. John Fisher answered with a balanced drive of their own, capitalizing on a penalty to keep their possession alive and punching in a short rushing score to even the contest. Riordan continued to stay sharp through the first quarter, completing every pass attempt and hitting Marascio for a 24-yard connection to close out the frame.

The Cardinals regained the lead in the opening minute of the second quarter when running back Camden Chance took a swing pass 80 yards to the house. Hartwick's offense looked to respond as Trinkle came up with a crucial third-down grab, but the Hawks were forced to punt. On the next drive, the Hawks defense stepped up with a three-and-out, and the offense went back to work. Williams ignited the series with a 22-yard rush, followed by big completions to Latrell Willis (Warwick, N.Y.) and Trinkle. Though an illegal formation penalty negated a touchdown, backup quarterback Braden Moreau (Ilion, N.Y.) came in and delivered a pinpoint strike to Massaregli for an 11-yard score, sending the teams to halftime tied.

The defenses took over in the third quarter, trading stops until a 58-yard completion set up a short St. John Fisher touchdown to reclaim the lead. The Hawks' offense responded with poise as Riordan — who had just one incompletion to that point — led another steady drive, finding Marascio for a 24-yard gain and later connecting with Miles Perry (Ilion, N.Y.) on a perfectly executed play-action for a 29-yard touchdown early in the fourth to tie things up once more.

The Cardinals delivered a quick counterpunch with a 54-yard score to move back in front and later capitalized on a Hartwick turnover, turning it into a short scoring drive to extend their lead to two possessions. Despite continued grit on both sides of the ball, the Hawks were unable to claw back late, falling to St. John Fisher in their return home.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will have a bye week before hitting the road to Alfred State, matching up with the Pioneers on Saturday, October 25th at 4PM.
