HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks looked to close out the Oneonta & Hartwick Classic on Sunday, taking on the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State after falling to the Oneonta Red Dragons in overtime the night before.

Hartwick opened with a 7–0 burst, fueled by five straight points from Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and capped by a finish from Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.). Eastern Connecticut answered with a seven-point run of its own before the Hawks reestablished control inside, as Durkin and Kylie Guarino (Auburn, N.Y.) found repeated success in the paint. Smith knocked down a pair at the line to give 'Wick a two-point edge after the first.

Back-to-back buckets from Jess Bowens (Mechanicville, N.Y.) set the tone early in the second, but the Warriors responded with their strongest quarter of the afternoon, outscoring the Hawks by eight to send Hartwick into halftime trailing by six.

The Blue and White swung momentum back in the third, winning the frame by seven behind persistent paint attacks from Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) and Smith. Durkin closed the quarter with an interior bucket, pushing Hartwick into the final ten minutes in a tight battle.

The fourth remained a seesaw affair as both sides traded blows in a rising wave of intensity. Smith delivered Hartwick's final basket with 19 seconds left, stretching the lead to two possessions. Eastern Connecticut trimmed the margin to two, and a costly Hartwick backcourt violation gave the Warriors one last chance. Off the ensuing inbound, the Warriors drilled a three at the buzzer to stun the Hawks and snatch the victory.

The Hawks will hit the road, matching up with SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday, November 25 at 5PM.
