HOW IT HAPPENED
Hartwick came out blazing, opening on a 16–2 run powered by two early threes from Emma Cohen (Utica, N.Y.) and steady finishes from Trinity Thornton (Sherburne, N.Y.). Niamh Kelly (Latham, N.Y.) and Macy Durkin (Syracuse, N.Y.) joined the interior attack while Cohen splashed her third triple to send the Hawks into the first break up 19–10.
The second quarter turned into a defensive slugfest, with the teams combining for only 10 points. Kelly continued to make an impact down low as Wick entered halftime up 11.
Coming out of the break, the Hawk offense stalled while Buffalo State found their scoring rhythm, putting up 19 points. Hartwick's nine turnovers in the quarter proved costly, and the Bengals flipped the game to take a two-point lead into the fourth.
The Hawks answered with resilience. Yadi Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) opened the quarter with a bucket and hit two free throws to regain the lead. Durkin and Kelly continued to chip in crucial paint touches, but Buffalo State tied the game at 43 with two minutes left. The final 120 seconds produced a stalemate, including a Bengal miss at the buzzer to force overtime.
In the first OT, Jess Bowens (Mechanicville, N.Y.) came through with two key buckets while trailing. After Buff State regained the lead, Smith drilled a cold-blooded triple to tie it at 51 with under a minute remaining. The Bengals had two more chances to win — two missed free throws with 15 seconds left and another miss in the paint at the horn — sending the game to a second overtime.
Emma Cohen took command in double OT, scoring six of Hartwick's eight points. Smith added two clutch free throws with 46 seconds remaining to make it a four-point game. Buffalo State cut it to one possession but missed yet another last-second look, sealing a gutsy 59–57 road win for the Blue and White.
