WEBSTER, N.Y. - The Hartwick Women's Swim and Dive Team powered their way into second place on Day Three of the Empire 8 Swim and Dive Championships, backed by several strong performances.

The Hawks opened their third day of competition with the 200 butterfly prelim, Savannah Evans (Livermore, Calif.) was the top finisher for the Hawks as Danielle DeCarlo (Whitesboro, N.Y.), and Amanda Wilbur (Watkins Glens, N.Y.) followed Evans closely, being separated by less than a second.

Kate Gucciardi (Cicero, N.Y.) and Bree Dy (Matawan, NJ) both qualified for the 100 yard backstroke final, Gucciardi timed in at 1:00.64 and Dy finished at 1:00.90.

Courtney Pierce (Fulton, N.Y.) was just edged out by .13 seconds by a Geneseo Knight, earning third place in the 100 breaststroke prelim. Min-Syun Chen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Jillian Ferrie (Middle Grove, N.Y.) also punched their tickets into the 100 breaststroke prelim.

After a solid preliminary round, Hartwick opened up their Day Three finals session with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard medley. Aubrey Vaile (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Anna Bischoff (Oneonta, N.Y.), Pierce and Dy combined for a time of 1:49.57 with Nazareth taking second with a time of 1:48.28 and Brockport placing third, posting a 1:48.42 finish.

DeCarlo, Evans, and Wilbur all earned crucial points in the 200 butterfly final, finishing in a group.

Pierce earned a silver medal in the 100 yard breaststroke event, timing in at 1:05.68 as Geneseo took gold with a 1:04.38 finish.

The Hawks capped off their strong Day Three performance with a third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. Cate Russo (San Pedro, Cal.), Katie Viera (South Windsor, Conn.), Bischoff and Pierce posted a final mark of seven minutes and fifty eight seconds.

Geneseo leads after three days with 845 points, Hartwick jumps into second place after being in fourth yesterday, totaling 469 points. Brockport takes third with 431 points, Nazareth sits in fourth with 422 points and Alfred remains in fifth, scoring 272 points.
