Hawks Fall Short in Road Series at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. - The Hartwick Hawks Softball program headed to Utica University for their third consecutive road series, being defeated by the Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon.

 

THE BASICS

  • Game 1 Score: Hartwick 2 Utica 11

  • Game 2 Score: Hartwick 8 Utica 10

  • Location: Utica, N.Y.

  • Records: Hartwick (6-18, 1-9 Empire 8) Utica (12-6, 7-1 Empire 8)

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Hartwick opened the top half of the first with a two out double from Nadia Pascucci (Troy, NY) but were unfortunately unable to bring her home.

  • The Hawks struck first in the top of the third as Sierra Phillips (Salem, NY) recorded a one out base knock to get things started.

  • Samantha Moore (Mamaroneck, NY) picked up a walk before Anna Klein (Souderton, PA) ripped one to left field for an RBI double.

  • Utica stormed back, putting up seven runs on seven hits to take their first lead of the contest.

  • Ashlee Stevens (Knox, NY) legged out of the infield single to lead off the fourth and Autumn Millington (Westmoreland, NY) reached on an error by the third baseman.

  • Casey O'Connor (Albany, NY) recorded a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners before Stevens & O'Connor successfully pulled off the double steal to bring their second run home.

  • The Pioneers struck for seven more runs on four hits to put game one out of reach for Wick.

 

GAME TWO

  • Utica struck for one run in the first inning on an RBI single to left field to begin the scoring. The Pioneers connected for five runs on three hits in the second inning to leap out to six runs.

  • A leadoff double and two flyouts would bring home the Pioneers' seventh run in the bottom of the third.

  • Moore began the rally for the Hawks in the top half of the fourth, singling to right field and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Brianna Blake (Mechanicville, NY) and Jess Betts (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) worked walks to jampack the bases full of Hawks.

  • Sam Moore scored on the wild pitch before Stevens worked the third consecutive walk, Lindsay Zgrodek (Glen Spey, NY) roped a two RBI single to left field.

  • The Hawks brought home their fourth run on the O'Connor sacrifice fly, clawing their back into the contest.

  • Utica extended their lead once again, bringing in three more runs to make the score 10-4 after four innings.

  • Hartwick got the bats going in the sixth inning as Blake and Betts recorded back to back singles and Stevens earned a free pass to load the bases.

  • Zgrodek brought home a run on the sacrifice fly and O'Connor singled to load the bases once again. Emily Holladay (Hancocks Bridge, N.J.) walked to bring home the second run of the inning.

  • The Royal Blue and White showed late life in the final inning as Sam Moore led off with a single to left field before the Hawks recorded two outs. The Hawks strung together three hits with Stevens picking up a double to left field, Zgrodek and O'Connor recorded RBI singles before recording their final out.

The Hawks will return home to match up with the Wildcats of SUNY Poly on Thursday, April 17 at 5PM and 7PM.
