HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks turned the pressure on in this heated game versus the SUNY Poly Wildcats, dominating possession all throughout the first half. Addyson Galuski (Waterford, N.Y.) struck first for the Hawks on offense, sending a shot towards the bottom left only two minutes into the match, though she couldn't find the back of the net. The Hawks wouldn't let up, however, utilizing every advantage to keep the ball past midfield and creating several scoring opportunities on seven corner kicks. However, the first forty-five minutes would end with the Hawks posting 18 shots and the Wildcats goalkeeper stopping 8 of them to keep the score even at 0-0, despite immense effort from Hartwick. Piersa in goal for the Hawks would not face a single shot in the first.
The Wildcats made a great effort to push forward on offense in an effort to match their level of defense, but it was Reilly Groff (Monroe, N.Y.) for the Hawks to break the ice first. Dahlia Landry (Manhattan, N.Y.) was credited with the assist off the quick pass. After the first goal was posted, 'Wick refused to slow down as Pochay sent a nice pass off a corner kick rebound attempt to Farnham for her first collegiate goal less than three minutes later. SUNY Poly responded with a shot attempt of their own, though Piersa would make the save.
'Wick continued to be a pest for the Wildcats' defense, tallying up several more corner kicks and shots on goal until the first-year duo of Ella Grupe (Freehold, N.Y.) and Camryn Montelongo (Thornton, Col.) would connect to increase their lead by three. Montelongo would be credited with her first collegiate assist.Â
In the final three minutes, SUNY Poly made a last-ditch effort to get one on the board, though Piersa was a brick wall and snagged her fifth collegiate shutout as a starting goalkeeper. This 3-0 victory over the Wildcats marks the Hawks'Â first win in Empire 8 conference play.
