ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick Women's swimming and diving team secured multiple top finishes to take down Springfield and Union in their final home tri-meet on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hartwick women's swimming and diving team turned in another strong performance, sweeping Union and Springfield in a home tri-meet. The Blue and White set the tone early with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as Cassidy Payrot (Cicero, NY), Min-Syun Chen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Aubrey Vaile (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), and Hope Valent (Cary, NC) captured the opening event in 1:56.22.
Cate Russo (San Pedro, Cal.) cruised through the first individual event of the afternoon, winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:29.65, finishing 21 seconds ahead of the field. Chen added crucial points for the Hawks with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching in at 1:10.93. Danielle DeCarlo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) kept Hartwick rolling by taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.56.
Vaile picked up her first individual win of the meet in the 50-yard freestyle, blazing to a time of 25.77 seconds. Chen completed the breaststroke sweep with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:34.45. Russo followed up her dominant performance in the distance freestyle with another victory, claiming first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.41.
DeCarlo capped off the Hawks' individual dominance with her second win of the day, taking first in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:21.71. Hartwick closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Russo, DeCarlo, Kate Gucciardi (Cicero, N.Y.), and Anna Bischoff (Oneonta, N.Y.) combined for a time of 3:57.06.
The Hawks completed the sweep with decisive victories over both Springfield and Union.
