Softball Drops Conference Double Header at Sage

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY, NY – The Hawks came up short in both ends of a conference doubleheader against the Gators.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Sage 7, Hartwick 1
  • Location: Albany, NY | Pulmeri Complex
  • Records: Sage (15-14, 8-5 Empire 8) Hartwick (3-26. 2-12 Empire 8)
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
Hartwick struggled to generate consistent offense throughout their first game and were hurt by defensive miscues in the 7-1 loss to the Gators in the first.

The Hawks went down in order through the first two innings, matching Sage early as both sides were held hitless through the opening frame. Sage broke through in the second, stringing together three hits – highlighted by an RBI single and double to take a 2-0 lead.

Sage added another run in the third, capitalizing on multiple Hartwick errors to extend the lead to 3-0. The Hawks threatened in the top of the third after Ashlee Stevens (Knox, NY) reached on an error, later moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. A pair of strikeouts ended the rally, stranding the runner in scoring position.

Hartwick finally broke through in the fourth inning. Nadia Pascucci (Troy, NY) and Samantha Moore (Mamaroneck, NY) opened with back-to-back singles, and with bases loaded, Casey O'Connor (Albany, NY) drew a walk to force in a run. The Hawks cut into the deficit to make it 3-1 but left three runners stranded unable to build further momentum.

The missed opportunity loomed large as Sage responded with a decisive four run inning. Despite only three hits in the frame, Hartwick committed two more errors, leading to a string of unearned runs that pushed the score to 7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
  • Final Score: Sage 6, Hartwick 2
  • Location: Albany, NY | Pulmeri Complex
  • Records: Sage (16-14, 9-5 Empire 8) Hartwick (3-27. 2-13 Empire 8)
Hartwick showed signs of life midway through their second game, but couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling to the Gators for the second time in a 6-2 loss.

Sage wasted no time jumping ahead, plating three runs in the bottom of the first behind four hits. A triple and a two-RBI single gave the Gators an early 3-0 advantage. Sage added another in the second on a solo home run, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Hartwick struggled to break through early but began to shift momentum in the fifth. Alicea Seitzinger (Bridgeton, NJ) was hit by a pitch to put her on base, followed by Mihaly Blake (Troy, NY) roping in an RBI double to get the Hawks on the board. Later in the innings, Emily Holladay (Hancocks Bridge, N.J.) came through with an RBI single to trim the deficit to 4-2.

The Hawks threatened to build on their rally but ended up leaving two runners stranded. Sage responded in the sixth capitalizing on defensive errors. Two Hartwick errors led to a pair of unearned runs, pushing their lead 6-2.

Despite opportunities late, including a runner reaching third in the seventh inning, the Hawks were unable to come up with the essential hit, sealing the 6-2 final.
