SCHENECTADY, NY – Volleyball battled Union to a competitive fourth set, before falling 3-1 at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Hartwick opened the match with a strong defensive effort, staying within striking distance early in the first set. Union eventually pulled away late to take the opening set 25-15. The Hawks responded in the second, building an early lead and maintaining control throughout the set. Hartwick built their largest lead of eight points at 18-10, before closing out the 25-19 victory.
The third set was another point for point rally, the teams tying at 6-6 early in the frame. Union created separation midway, holding on for the 25-17 win, putting the Hawks behind 2-1.
Hartwick came out fighting in the fourth set. After Union took a 5-3 lead, the Hawks answered with a 4-1 run to move ahead 7-6. The teams continued trading points, with 12 total ties throughout the set. Hartwick later pulled ahead 21-20 before Union answered. The Hawks battled from 24-21 to tie the set at 24-24, taking a 25-24 lead. Union escaped as the set entered extra points, a 28-26 decision closing out the match.
Lucille Walker (Ithaca, N.Y.) led the Hawks offensively with 13 kills, while
Maya Lesinski (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added eight kills, five aces, and 22 digs.
Sophia Palladino (Owego, N.Y.) recorded eight kills and 12 digs, while
Thylia Keoviengsamay (Rome, N.Y.) finished with 35 assists and 15 digs.
Malia Dake (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) anchored the back row with 16 digs, while Hartwick finished strong defensively at the net with 8 total blocks.
