Football Falls on the Road at #17 Saint John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY – St. John Fisher scored the game's first 24 points in a 41-14 victory over Hartwick on Saturday at Growney Stadium in Rochester. The Cardinals, ranked #17 in the latest AFCA poll and #18 in the d3football.com poll, registered eight interceptions on the day en route to the win. Hartwick, which falls to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Empire 8, has now dropped three straight to nationally ranked opponents. Fisher improves to 7-0 and 3-0 in the conference.
The hosts turned a pair of interceptions into 10 points in the first half of play. Brendan Moore picked off quarterback Kyle Morenus (Sidney, NY/Sidney) on the Hartwick 27 and Ryan Kramer ran it in from the 21 yard-line two plays later to opening the scoring with 7:53 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Tim Bailey's four-yard keeper capped an 11-play, 56-yard drive and the Cardinals led 14-0. Later in the period, 'Wick running back Anthony Casimano (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) was intercepted on his only pass attempt of the day by Zach Dolan on the Hartwick 25. Chad Monheim tacked on three points on a 19-yard field goal seven plays later as the Cardinals led 17-0 at the half.
Fisher received the ball to start the second half and marched 67 yards on nine plays with Bailey connecting with Ryan Francis for a 10-yard touchdown pass and the lead was 24 points for the hosts.
Morenus drove the Hawks to their first points on their next possession. He completed a 17-yard pass to Ryan Mosack (Oneida, NY/Oneida) and ran for an 18-yard gain in the drive before Casimano capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown run. Heath Dunn (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) added the extra point.
After sophomore Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) stripped Bailey of the ball and recovered the fumble on the Cards' next possession, Hartwick cut the lead to just 10 points after an 11-play, 73-yard drive. Casimano crossed the goal line on a 1-yard run and another Dunn extra point made the score 24-14 to end the third quarter.
Ryan Francis took the ensuing kickoff back 62 yards for the Cardinals and three plays later, Bailey hit Kramer for another touchdown to extend the lead. The Hawks would not get far the rest of the day as their next five possessions in the fourth quarter resulted in interceptions. Fisher would turn two of them into two more touchdowns with six minutes left and 3:38 left on the clock, respectively.
Morenus finished as the Hawks' top rusher with 66 yards gained on the ground. He threw for 190 yards on 18-for-35 passing and was picked off six times. Mosack made eight catches for 76 yards and Jordan Wilkins (Portsmouth, NH/Hyde School) gained 87 yards on four grabs.
Schweitzer led all tacklers with 15. Chad Rockefeller (Delhi, NY/Delaware Valley) made 12 stops and one tackle for a loss, Davionne Price (Bloomville, NY/Delhi) made nine tackles, and Justin Deming (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) and RJ Roth (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) each recorded eight hits.
Hartwick has a bye week next weekend before traveling to Springfield on October 30th in another Empire 8 contest.
