#21 Alfred Tops ’Wick Football

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Alfred scored touchdowns on three of its first five possessions on Saturday in a 35-14 victory over Hartwick at Wright Stadium. The defending Co-Empire 8 champs received 272 passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Tom Secky and 10 catches for 165 receptions yards and four scores from wide out Ryan Thon in the win. Alfred improves to 5-0 and 2-0 in the Empire 8 while Hartwick slips to 2-3 and 0-2 in conference play.
Hartwick quarterback Kyle Morenus (Sidney, NHY/Sidney) threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns on the day while connecting on 20 of 45 of his passes. Wide receiver Jordan Wilkins (Portsmouth, NH/Hyde School) made seven catches for 106 yards and one score. Ryan Mosack (Oneida, NY/Oneida) and Nate Rockefeller (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) each made six catches and combined for 114 receiving yards. Anthony Casimano (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) gained 50 yards on the ground.
The Saxons intercepted quarterback Dan Brainard's (Owego, NY/Owego Free) second pass of the day and brought it back inside the Hartwick 20 to begin the game with a bang. Secky connected with Thon on a 15-yard pass and the extra point quickly made it 7-0 Saxons.
After an interception and a punt on their next two drives, the Saxons capitalized on a 9-play, 81-yard drive capped by a Secky-Thon five-yard connection for a 14-point edge. The Hawks punted to give Alfred the ball back and the Saxons tacked on another six after a 96-yard drive over the next five minutes for a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Hartwick finally broke through after a Tim Martin (Garden City, NY/Garden City) fumble recovery on a Secky miscue. A 3-yard passing play from Morenus to Rockefeller put the Hawks on the board after a 9-play, 36-yard drive to cut the deficit to 14 points and the half ended 21-7.
The Saxons received the ball to start the second half and quickly moved down the field for their fourth touchdown. Thon made a pair of great catches, one for 41 yards to put his team in Hartwick territory and another for a 21-yard score.
The Hawks punted on their next possession and returner Austin Dwyer made them pay on a 78-yard return for a touchdown and the game appeared to be out of reach at 35-7.
Early in the fourth, however, Morenus hooked up with Mosack for 35 yards and then hit Wilkins for a 20-yard touchdown pass making the score 35-14. Secky then fumbled on the first play of the Saxons' next drive with Martin recovering once again, this time on the Alfred 13 yard-line giving 'Wick a great opportunity to cut further into the lead.
Morenus was picked off by Roland O'Brien, but Secky returned the favor two plays later as Pete Jackson (Groton, NY/Groton) made a miraculous one-handed interception to get the ball back for the Blue and White on the AU 34.
The Hawks drove to the Saxon 5 yard-line but could not punch the ball in turning it over on downs to Alfred. The Saxons killed off another five minutes before 'Wick got the ball back but the Hawks could not muster a first down.
The Saxons finished the day with 391 yards of offense and 18 first downs. The Hawks recorded 311 yards of offense and 19 first downs in the contest.
Junior Jordan Spirou (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) led all tacklers with 12 on the day. Justin Deming (West Winfield, NY/Mt. Markham) and RJ Roth (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) each had six hits and Jim DeRosa (Centerreach, NY/Centerreach) notched five. Roth also registered a forced fumble and Stephen Leisenfelder (Wynantskill, NY/Troy) and Davionne Price (Bloomville, NY/Delhi) had the other Hartwick interceptions.
Mike Raplee led the Saxons with seven tackles including three tackles for a loss of 13 yards.
Hartwick hits the road next Saturday for another Empire game against a nationally ranked opponent. The Hawks play at #20 St. John Fisher.
