SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Freshman Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) poured in a career-best 27 points but it wasn't enough as Skidmore College pulled away in the late stages in an 87-78 victory Tuesday night in Saratoga Springs. The Hawks are now 2-3 on the year while the Thoroughbreds improve to 3-1.
Suderley hit 10 of his 20 shots on the night and connected on 6-of-7 from the free-throw line to finish as the game's top scorer. He added eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action before fouling out with 1:23 to play. Junior Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) registered a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven University) contributed a season-high 19 points and dished out seven assists for the Hawks.
In a game that was tight throughout with 12 lead changes and four tie scores, a Suderley layup cut the Skidmore advantage to a single point, 65-64, with 5:37 remaining. The Thoroughbreds would take control as they rattled off 12 straight points in the next 1:50 of action. The hosts, who were not afraid to shoot from the outside with 42 three-point attempts in the game, knocked down three treys in the run.
Two layups from Suderley and a free throw from Ryder got the Hawks back to a single-digit deficit, 77-69, with under two minutes to play, but a Kyle Clark 3-point play that drew Suderley's fifth foul and gave the Thoroughbreds a 12-point edge would ultimately put the game out of reach. The Hawks fought in the final 83 seconds of the game, cutting the Skidmore lead to nine points on three occasions but could get no closer.
The Thoroughbreds were led by Jeff Altimar and Melvis Langyuintuo who combined for 41 points, 13 rebounds and six three-pointers. Altimar hit for a team-best 21 points while Langyuintuo scored 20. Terron Victoria was also in double figures with 11.
Skidmore hurt Hartwick on the glass earning a 50-39 edge in rebounds. The Thoroughbred total included 31 offensive boards, which they turned into 32 points. Hartwick hit 49% from the floor as a team, including 57% in the second-half. Skidmore made only 36% of its shots in the contest.
The Hawks return home for a game with Morrisville State on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The opening tip is slated for 3 p.m.
