PRINCETON, NJ - #12 Hartwick dropped a 14-11 to arch rival Michigan to open up play at the Princeton University Invitational, but the Hawks rebounded to down Iona 20-14 to close the day 1-1. Hartwick's overall mark now stands at 8-3.
Against the 5th ranked Wolverines, the damage was done in the second quarter of play. Michigan broke open a 2-1 game at the end of the first quarter, scoring eight of 11 tallies in the period for a 10-4 halftime lead. The Hawks trailed 13-6 heading into the fourth and outscored the Wolverines 5-1 for the final 14-11 score line.
Kirsten Hudson (Wellington, New Zealand/Sacred Heart) had a hand in eight Hartwick goals. The Hawks' all-time leader in points, goals, and assists scored four times and also picked up four helpers in the game. Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls College), Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec/Sacred Heart), and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA/Montebello) each scored twice for the Hawks. Goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan) made 10 saves.
Hartwick took control early against the Gaels in its second match of the night. The Hawks took an 8-4 lead after one period and led 11-7 at halftime. 'Wick led by four after three quarters, 14-10, and tallied six times in the fourth for the six-goal victory.
Analytis scored five goals to pace Hartwick. Hanneke Alfernink (Nijverdal, Netherlands/Univ. of Groningen) contributed four goals and three assists, and Martinez added three tallies. Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA/Laguna Beach), Adrienne Holosko (Windsor, Ontario/Vincent Massey), and Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak) netted two goals apiece. Dorman made 10 saves. Hayley Cox (El Segundo, CA/El Segundo) made two stops in the fourth quarter.
Hartwick concludes play tomorrow with a pair of matches against Colorado State and Wagner.
