LEWISBURG, PA – Hartwick water polo fell by a final count of 9-5 to #10 Michigan on Saturday in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) semifinals at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, PA.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas H.S.) recorded two goals for the Hawks.
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia / St. Clares College),
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School), and
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA / Cathedral Catholic H.S.) each registered a goal.
After five and a half minutes of scoreless action, the Wolverines broke the tie with 2:33 left in the opening quarter and they added a second 14 ticks later for a 2-0 advantage. Brennan tallied with 20 seconds remaining to make it a 2-1 game after eight minutes.
Michigan extended their lead with the only two tallies of the second quarter and it took a 4-1 lead into the break.
The Wolverines made it a four-goal game 1:42 into the third period. Kotanchyan answered with a 5-meter goal only to have Michigan come right back with a goal less than a minute later. Polak scored the first of her two goals on a penalty shot but the Wolverines netted their seventh goal with under a minute left for a 7-3 lead after three quarters.
Michigan scored early in the fourth before Polak scored at 5:36. Edwards tallied at the 3:07 mark to bring the Hawks within three, but the Wolverines scored with 1:49 left to put the game away.
Kotanchyan finished the day with a team-high three steals. Brennan, Polak and
Charlotte Cottle (Sydney, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College) chipped in two apiece.
Hannah Edwards (Encinitas, CA / Cathedral Catholic H.S.) and
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison H.S.) split goalkeeping duties. Edwards stopped four shots in the first half. Santos made five stops in the second half.
The #13 Hawks will play #14 Indiana in the third-place match tomorrow at noon. With a victory, the Hawks would reach the 30-win mark for just the third time in program history.
