ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's women's water polo team, currently ranked 12th nationally, defeated visiting Siena by a final score of 19-13 on Monday at 'Wick's Moyer Pool. The victory improves the Hawks' record to 12-3 overall.
The Hawks led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter as they scored four advantage goals and a 5-meter goal. Senior Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak) and freshman Hanneke Alfernink (Nijverdal, Netherlands/Univ. of Groningen) each scored twice in the period. Hartwick pulled away in the second quarter with seven of the period's nine scores. Evans tallied four times with Freeborn adding a pair of tallies.
The 'Wick advantage swelled to as many as 10 goals (17-7) at one point in the third quarter before the Saints scored the final two goals of the period to make the score 17-9 entering the fourth. Siena cut the deficit to six three times in the fourth period, but could get no closer to the Hawks. 'Wick's Martina Shorkey (Hollywood, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) had the only two Hawk tallies in the quarter.
Evans finished the match with a team-best six goals. Freeborn and Alfernink scored three apiece to go along with Shorkey's pair.
Siena was led by Camille Norman's five goals. Katie Ness added three and Devan Ragg tallied two. Goalie Jennifer Kissel made eight saves in the game.
Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan) started the game in goal for Hartwick making one save. Hayley Cox (El Segundo, CA/El Segundo) played the final three periods and stopped nine Saint shots.
The Hawks next travel to Bloomington, IN for the Elite Eight Tournament hosted by Indiana University. The Hawks open up the tournament against Princeton at on March 6th at 12:30 p.m.
