Men’s Tennis Wins First

          HILTON HEAD, SCMatt Whitty's (St. Catherines, Ontario/Ridley College) victory in fifth singles handed Hartwick's men's tennis team its first dual match win of the year on Wednesday 5-4 over Franklin College (IN) in Hilton Head, SC. With the match count knotted at 4-4, Whitty came from behind after dropping the first set to win sets number two and three to seal the win for 'Wick. The Hawks improve to 1-2 with the triumph. Franklin falls to 3-5.
          Jordan Moran led Whitty in the deciding match after taking the first set 6-3. The Hartwick senior came back to even the match at one set apiece 6-4 in the second, and the final set went down to the wire after both players won six games. The tie-breaker was all Whitty as he won seven of eight points for his first singles win of the year. 
          Junior Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont), and sophomores Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military) and Bobby Amerson (Middletown, NY/Middletown) each were additional singles winners for the Hawks. Barr won 6-2, 6-3 over Justin Smith for his second consecutive victory. Navarro got into the win column for the season 6-2, 6-0 over Nate Kelly, and Amberson won his first career match 6-3, 6-4 over Brandon Roberts.
          Navarro and Whitty combined for the Hawks' lone win in double play. The pair defeated Roberts and Kelly by a count of 8-4.
         The Hawks next play on April 7th at home against Utica. The match is the Empire 8 opener for both squads.
