BLOOMINGTON, IN - Hartwick water polo fell a game short of its second straight Elite 8 Tournament crown as the 11th ranked Hawks lost in the championship to #8 Michigan 11-8 on Sunday at Indiana University's Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Six different Hawks registered goals led by freshman Sasha Freeborn's (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls College) three tallies. Hanneke Alfernink (Nijverdal, Netherlands/Univ. of Groningen), Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec/Sacred Heart), Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak), Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec/John Rennie), and Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA/Laguna Beach, CA) each scored once.
Meaghan Cobb led the Wolverines with four goals. Keller Felt and Alison Mantel each recorded a pair of tallies.
The Wolverines secured the win thanks to strong performances in the second and third quarters. The two teams were tied at two after the first period before UM outscored the Hawks 4-1 in the second for a 6-3 lead the half. The Wolverines extended their edge to five (10-5) after three and Hartwick pulled closer in the fourth with a 3-1 scoring edge in the final period.
Hartwick goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan) made 10 saves. Michigan keeper Alex Adamson stooped nine Hartwick shots.
The Hawks (14-4) will next play in the Marist Invitational from March 20-21.
