ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men's tennis came up just short in its quest to stay unbeaten in conference play, 5-4 against Nazareth on Sunday in Oneonta. The Hawks split their six singles matches and fell in two of three doubles matches on the day. Sophomores Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Reg.) and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military) both remained flawless at 3-0 in conference singles matches with victories in their respective flights.
Boyd and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie) won their fourth straight match together at first doubles with a thrilling 9-8 (7-2) tie-breaker victory over Naz's Ryan McCormick and Josh Mulligan.
With a 2-1 deficit heading into singles action, Boyd, Navarro, and Dumas all registered straight-sets wins in their matches. Boyd took down McCormick 6-3, 6-2, Navarro defeated Adam Landry 6-3, 6-3, and Dumas won over Steve Trobert 6-4, 6-4.
Hartwick (3-3, 2-1 E8) plays three matches this coming week. The Hawks travel to conference champ Ithaca in a rematch of last season's Empire 8 semifinals on Wednesday. 'Wick then hosts Cobleskill in a non-conference match on Thursday before traveling to Stevens on Saturday.
