ONEONTA, NY – 'Wick's men's tennis rolled to its second straight win over a Liberty League opponent on Thursday with an 8-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Hawks, now 6-5 on the season, have now defeated the Engineers for the third straight season.
The Hawks led 2-1 after doubles play and swept all six singles matches to score the victory. Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Reg.) and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie) downed Evan Creer and Matthew Asher 8-3, and Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, Ontario/Ridley College) combined toscore an 8-1 win over Alex Franz and Adam Generale in doubles play.
The Hawks took the six singles flights in straight sets. Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory in fourth singles, and Boyd won 6-1, 6-2 in the first singles flight. Navarro defeated Asher 6-2, 6-3 in the third spot with Dumas (6-4, 6-2), Whitty (6-4, 6-0), and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY/Stamford) (6-1, 6-3) each scoring wins in their respective flights.
The Hawks, winners of three of their last four dual matches, play at Alfred on Saturday in their next contest. A win would set up a critical Empire 8 match on Sunday on the road at RIT. A victory over the Tigers would put Hartwick in the driver's seat for its second straight Empire 8 Tournament berth.
