Hartwick Men’s Tennis Opens Empire 8 Season in Convincing Fashion Over Utica

          ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick College men's tennis team opened up the Empire 8 season with a resounding 8-1 win over visiting Utica on Wednesday. With the victory, the Hawks are now 2-2 overall. The Pioneers slip to 0-2 and 0-2 in the Empire 8 standings.
          'Wick led 2-1 after doubles play but cruised in singles action sweeping all six matches without dropping a set. Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Reg.) and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie) combined for an 8-3 in first doubles and Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY/Stamford) teamed up for an 8-6 victory in third doubles for the two Hartwick wins heading into singles action.
          Boyd, Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Dumas, Barr, Matt Whitty (St . Catherines, Ontario), and Bobby Amberson (Middletown, NY/Middletown) each got into the win column in their matches. Boyd won 6-3, 6-2 and Navarro triumphed 6-2, 6-3 in first and second singles, respectively. Dumas edged Thien Doan 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in third singles, and Barr won 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth flight. Whitty had an easy time in fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Amberson stayed unbeaten with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win.
          The Hawks ride their two-match win streak into tomorrow as they host RPI at 4 p.m.
