Hawks Finish 2-2 at Elmira Invitational; Desmond Named All-Tournament

ELMIRA, NY - Hartwick volleyball (2-6) wrapped up play at the Elmira College Invitational on Saturday with a win over Hilbert in three sets and a loss to Houghton also in three. Junior Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) was selected to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the days matches.

In the Hawks' opener, Houghton won all three sets 25-14, 25-13, 25-9. Junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) registered seven kills and nine digs to lead the way for 'Wick.

Hartwick was more successful in their second match as they made quick work of the Hilbert Hawks, 25-10, 25-23, 25-18. Offensively, Kelly Sprengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), Desmond, and Mausert combined for 29 kills in the match. Spengel led the Hawks with 11 kills and she added eight digs. Desmond and Mausert each contributed nine kills and Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) picked up eight digs. Freshman Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) delivered 20 assists and also contributed eight digs.

On the weekend, Desmond finished with 16 kills and 13 blocks in her first tournament of the year.

Hartwick hits the road next Friday and Saturday for the annual Union College Invitational. The Hawks play the host Dutchwomen and the Sage Colleges on Friday before playing the Skidmore Thoroughbreds and the Vassar College Brewers on Saturday.
