Volleyball Begins Season Against Kean, Clarkson

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick volleyball began its 2010 campaign on Saturday in the opening day of competition of the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament. The Hawks battled Kean in their opener and 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Clarkson in their second match, falling in both contests.

'Wick fell in three games to the Kean Cougars, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 14-25. Freshman Kelly Sprengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) and junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) led the way offensively for the Hawks. Sprengel, playing in her first collegiate match, notched a team-best 15 kills and added 10 digs. Mausert contributed 10 kills and 11 digs. Setter Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk), who was also suiting up for the Blue and White for the first time, dished out 28 assists and added 10 digs.

In the Hawks' second match, the Golden Knights were overpowering, winning 25-9, 25-14, 25-6. Mausert had five kills to lead 'Wick. Lintner chipped in seven assists, and Sprengel had a team-high six digs.

Clarkson and Western Connecticut State lead the standings after the first day of play with 2-0 records. RIT, Kean, and City College of New York are each 1-1, and Oswego and the Hawks are still looking for their first victory.

Play continues tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. as the Hawks play Oswego. 'Wick closes out their matches against Western Connecticut at 2 p.m.
