'Wick Volleyball Closes Out Holiday Inn Tournament; Clarkson Captures Title

ONEONTA, NY - Clarkson and Western Connecticut State both finished 4-0 at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament, but the title went to the Golden Knights, who won out in tie-breakers. Hartwick concluded play in the two-day event with a four-set setback to Oswego and a three-set loss to the second-place Colonials.

Clarkson needed a big comeback in the tournament's final match against RIT to secure the top spot. The Tigers opened up a two sets to zero lead, but the Golden Knights would battle back taking sets three, four, and five by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 16-14. Alison Schroder and Sara Artus were both picked for all-tournament honors for the winners.

In Hartwick's opening match against the Oswego State Lakers, the two teams split the opening first two sets with the Lakers taking the first 25-16 and the Hawks winning the second set 25-23. Oswego would win a pivotal set number three by a narrow margin, 25-23, and closed out the match 25-14 in the fourth.

Junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) notched 13 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend for Hartwick. For her efforts, she garnered all-tournament honors at the conclusion of the event. Freshman Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) contributed eight kills and classmates Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Kelly Sprengel (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) combined for 28 digs.

The Hawks put together a solid effort against Western Connecticut in their final match. The Colonials would take all three sets, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20. Sprengel registered nine kills and Mausert added five kills and seven digs. Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) picked up 17 assists and eight digs, and Vitale chipped in with 10 digs.

The Hawks hit the road next weekend to take part in the Elmira College Tournament on Sept. 10-11.
