ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick women's tennis team defeated visiting Elmira College 8-1, in their home opener on Tuesday. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, and then swept all six singles matches to earn the victory.
Jen Lin (Albany, NY/Colonie) and Kimberly Post (Nashua, NH/North Middlesex Reg.) provided a win for the Hawks at first doubles, 8-1. Angelica Cofer (Litchfield, CT/ Litchfield) and Christina Sorrentino (Sherrill, NY/ VVS) defeated their opponents at second doubles, 8-1.
The lone Elmira victory came at third doubles where Rebecca Kingman (Hamilton, NJ/ Steniart) and Emily Marois (Brooklyn, CT/Woodstock Academy) edged Emily Scarano (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) and Carly Jesset (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7-4).
The Hawks had no problem sweeping singles play without dropping a single set. Lin won at first singles 6-0, 6-4. In her first singles match as a Hawk, Cofer defeated Rebecca Kingman 6-3, 6-0 in second singles. Post rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the third flight, and Sorrentino was pushed but claimed victory by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in fourth singles.
Jesset and Lauren Michaels (Clinton, NY/ Clinton) each cruised at five and six singles, respectively. Jesset beat EC's Melanie Walker 6-0, 6-2, and Michaels defeated Micah Moskoff 6-1,6-2.
The Hawks will look to go 2-0 in the Empire 8 as they match up with Alfred at home on Sunday at 2 p.m.
