ANN ARBOR, MI - Hartwick's women's water polo team split a pair of matches at the Michigan Kickoff on Sunday at the University of Michigan's Donald B. Canham Natatorium to wrap up the Hawks' opening competition of the 2011 season.
'Wick (1-3) won for the first time in their second match of the day against Colorado State. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead on the Rams and finished them off for an 11-7 victory. Earlier in the day, Hartwick trailed nationally seventh-ranked San Jose State 7-5 at halftime but the Spartans outscored the Hawks 8-4 in the second half to earn a 15-9 victory.
Against the Rams, the Hawks bolted out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. CSU would narrow the gap in both the second and third quarters, trailing by a 7-5 margin heading into the final quarter of play. Hartwick controlled the fourth quarter outscoring the Rams 4-2 to secure their first victory of the season.
Junior Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) led Hartwick with three goals. Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), Adrienne Holosko (Windsor, Ontario) and Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) added two tallies apiece, and Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA) and Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) each scored once. Goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) stopped seven shots in goal for the Hawks, who improve to 2-0 all-time against CSU.
Amber Bryan and Orsi Nadasdy each accounted for two goals for Colorado State. Keeper Melissa Fisher stopped 13 Hartwick shots.
In 'Wick's first game, the team trailed 2-1 after one quarter and 7-5 at the half against San Jose State. The Spartans would outscore the Hawks 4-2 in each of the final two quarters to earn the win.
Analytis (pictured) led the Hawks with four goals in the game. Bass and Capparelli each scored twice. Sophomore Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) added one goal for 'Wick and Dorman recorded 15 saves in the game.
Allie Stewart led the way for the Spartans with eight goals. Timi Molnar scored twice with five other players scoring goals. Meagan Minson made 13 saves in the SJSU cage.
The Hawks next play on February 9th in California. Hartwick begins its west coast trip with matches against Cal-Baptist and Cal San Bernadino.
