Suderley Drops 34 as Hawks Defeat Aggies

York, PA- Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) scored a career-high 34 points as the men's basketball team defeated the Delaware Valley Aggies 82-68 in the semi-finals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by York College. The win improves Hartwick's record to 10-0 while the Aggies fall to 2-7.

Suderley shot 13-for-22 from the floor and made three three-pointers. He also added 12 rebounds. Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) had 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) chipped in 10 points.

Jeremy Beckett led the Aggies with 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nathan Bollinger added 15 points.

There were seven lead changes and the score was tied three times in the first half. Both teams traded shots in the first several minutes of the game, but a 13-0 Hawks run that started with 9:30 remaining would give them a 32-21 lead four minutes later. Delaware Valley would shrink the deficit to seven points with 3:38 left in half. Hartwick would then go on a 9-0 run to close out the first half with Keane scoring two straight layups to give 'Wick a 43-27 lead at halftime.

Hartwick looked poised to run away with the game, but the Aggies fought their way back. A 13-3 Aggie run to begin the second half put them to within six points of tying the game, 46-40, at the 16:24 mark. The teams exchanged shots and free throws and Delaware Valley got to within seven points of tying the game with 9:27 remaining at 61-54. That was as close as the team got as Hartwick burst out to an 8-0 run with Suderley scoring six of those points and the Hawks improved their lead to 69-54 with 7:24 left in the period.

"Jared did a great job tonight and made some great, tough shots," remarked head coach Todd McGuinness. "Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven) did a good job handling the ball as did Christian Laputka (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area). Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral Prep) played well to help us get the victory. Tomorrow is a tough game against Penn State-Abington and hopefully we can come out with another victory."

Hartwick was 29-of-64 from the field (45.3%) and made 15-of-20 free throws (75%). The Aggies were 21-of-59 in shooting (35.6%) but were a paltry 2-of-14 (14.3%) from beyond the three-point arc while the Hawks shot 9-of-21 (42.9%).

The Hawks will play Penn State-Abington in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. The Nittany Lions defeated host York 83-73 in the evening's earlier game.
