YORK, PA- Four Hawks scored in double figures led by Jared Suderley's (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) 28 points as the men's basketball team defeated Penn State-Abington 104-90 to win the York College Coaches vs. Cancer Championship on Thursday afternoon. Hartwick's record is now a perfect 11-0 while the Nittany Lions fall to 3-6.
Suderley was named the tournament MVP. Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven) was also named to the all-tournament team.
Suderley shot 9-of-12 from the field while also grabbing eight rebounds and he recorded five assists. Carpio scored 17 points and shot 6-of-9 overall including 5-of-7 from behind the three-point arc. Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral Prep) had 15 points. Aaron Laing (Laurens, NY/Laurens) came off the bench and scored a career-high 13 points while shooting 4-for-6 from the field. He also had seven boards.
"Jared had a great tournament and Andres had some big threes and made some big plays," said head coach Todd McGuinness. "Laing had big quality minutes off the bench."
Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) was a basket and a rebound short of a double-double as he scored eight points and secured nine rebounds. He dished out six assists. Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) had eight points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
"Keane played an overall great game," McGuinness added. "Vic Angeline (East Brunswick, NJ/Rutgers Prep) also had two big three-pointers. Overall it was a great performance."
Mike Marvin led the Nittany Lions with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Colacci chipped in with 19 points.
The first half was a tight affair with four lead changes and six ties. Following a three from Suderley, the Hawks took a 20-14 lead with 12:51 on the clock. The Nittany Lions then went on a 13-0 run to go up 27-20 with 9:47 left to play in the period. Hartwick proceeded to go on a 16-3 run to regain their six-point lead with 4:25 to play. Penn State-Abington would come back to tie the game three times with the final time coming with eight seconds left in the half on a jumper by Curtis Covey.
'Wick started the second half scoring seven straight points and went up by eight following a trey from Carpio at 17:28. The lead increased to 13 points at 11:18 following a free throw from Laing. The Nittany Lions came back to cut the deficit to within six points with the final time coming with 8:51 left in the game. The Hawks proved to be too much in the end as the closest the Nittany Lions would get was eight points as Hartwick went up 99-84 with 2:30 left to play.
The Hawks shot 53.8% from the field in the game and made 46.2% of their three-pointers. Penn State-Abington shot 47.9% from the field and converted 38.5% of their three-point attempts. Hartwick had the advantage in rebounds 45-31.
Hartwick got a huge lift from bench as they outscored the Nittany Lion bench 28-13. Second-chance points also played a big part as the Hawks had a 28-14 advantage.
The Hawks return to the court on January 6 when they begin conference play on the road against Elmira at 8 p.m.
