SAN DIEGO, CA - Hartwick's 14th ranked water polo team wrapped up competition in 8th place at the 16-team UC San Diego Triton Invitational after losses on Sunday to #11 Cal Irvine and #13 Cal Northridge. The Hawks, who played all four of their matches in the tournament against nationally ranked opponents, are now 4-6 on the year.
Against the Anteaters, the Hawks came up short in the fourth quarter. 'Wick trailed 4-3 at the half and 7-6 after three quarters of play. UCI would outscore the Hawks 5-3 in the fourth, however, to earn the 12-9 win.
Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec), Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA), and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) each scored twice to lead Hartwick.
Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands), Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec), and Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) each tallied once and Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) made five saves.
In their second game of the day, the Hawks led at the end of the first (3-2) and third (8-7) quarters but the Matadors outscored 'Wick 4-2 in the final quarter for an 11-10 win.
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), McKee, and Mensink registered two goals in the game. Bass, Freeborn, Leonard, and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored once. Dorman stopped seven Matador shots.
For the tournament, Mensink paced the Hawks with nine goals. McKee added seven tallies and Leonard (pictured) recorded five. Dorman stopped 35 shots in the Hartwick cage.
The Hawks next play in Poughkeepsie at the Marist Invitational on February 19th and 20th.
