ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Farmingdale 7-0 in the first half of play and won by a comfortable 15-8 margin on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The win ups the Hawks' overall record to 3-1 and avenges last season's 11-10 loss to the Rams.
Freshman Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) nearly outscored the Rams by himself as he tallied a career-high seven times in the game. Senior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) notched a six-point day with a goal and five helpers. Sophomore Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and freshman Brian Finnegan (East Northport, NY/Northport) recorded two goals apiece for 'Wick.
Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) opened up the scoring for Hartwick 4:32 into the game and the Hawks tacked on two more 1:05 apart later in the period for a three-goal edge. Senior Daggett Morse (Needham, MA/Catholic Memorial) then found the net for the first time in his career with 1:26 left in the period, and Schaefer's second made it 5-0 after one period.
In the second session, Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) and Schaefer tallied and the Hawks led 7-0 at the half. Keeper Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) kept the Rams off the scoreboard as he stopped five shots.
Jimmy Owsinski finally found the net for the visitors 46 seconds into the second quarter. It would mark the first of five goals on the day. Hartwick would score three of the next four goals with Hughes, Schaefer, and Aitchison tallying to extend the lead after three quarters to 10-2.
The Rams would score six times in the fourth period but they could never cut their deficit to lower than six. Finnegan notched Hartwick's first two scores of the fourth. Schaefer closed out the day for 'Wick with the team's final three in the last 3:20 of the game.
'Wick outshot Farmingdale 46-30 in the game, and held a slim 34-31 edge in ground balls. The two teams nearly split the day's face-offs with the Rams winning 13 of 25.
Shields and Max Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayettville Manlus) had the Hartwick team-high for ground balls with four apiece. Farmingdale's Frank Limanni notched a game-high seven. Tim Caden also added three tallies for the Rams (1-2).
