ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's nationally 14th ranked water polo team defeated Utica, 20-6, and Brown, 17-11, on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hawks have now won eight straight and improve to 12-6 on the year.
The Hawks cruised over the Pioneers in their opener, improving to 15-0 all-time against UC. 'Wick led by as many as nine goals in the first half of play.
Hoku Keola (Aiea, HI) led the way with four goals. Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI), Megan Clampitt (Barrington, IL), and Sara Herlich (Shrewsbury, MA) each registered three tallies. Martina Shorkey (Hollywood, FL) and Alice Denny (Mundelein, IL) scored two goals apiece for the Hawks. Utica received five goals from Evelyn Kurzac.
In the nightcap, the Hawks opened up a 6-3 lead over the visiting Bears in the first quarter. The Hawks outscored Brown 4-1 in the second quarter for a six-goal edge and twice led by eight in the second half in the victory.
With the win, Hartwick improves to 26-6 against the Bears since 2001. The Hawks have also won 24 of the last 27 meetings.
Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) led the way for 'Wick with four tallies. Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA) contributed a trio of goals. Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec), Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec), and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) picked up two goals each.
The program celebrated its 10th anniversary on the day. Hartwick is the second winningest program in the modern era since the origination of an NCAA-sanctioned championship in 2001. The Hawks hold an all-time record of 282 wins and 108 losses in 10 seasons of competition.
The program also honored its seniors Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA), Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand), Stephanie Abajian (La Canada, CA), and Adrienne Holosko (Windsor, Ontario) for their four-year careers in a pre-game ceremony.
Hartwick opens up Western Division play next weekend. The Hawks travel west to play Mercyhurst and Gannon on March 19.
