BAKERSFIELD, CA - Hartwick's nationally 15th ranked water polo team improved to 16-6 on the season with a pair of wins at the Cal State University Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday. The Hawks, who defeated Cal Baptist 12-6 and Cal San Bernardino 15-4, have now won 12 consecutive games and have not lost since February 13.
In the Hawks first game of the day against the Lancers, eight different players registered goals, led by Jessica McKee's (Tustin, CA) five tallies. The two teams were tied after each of the first two quarters before the Hawks took control in the second half. 'Wick outscored CBU 5-2 in the third period to take an 8-5 lead and closed out the game with four of five goals in the fourth quarter.
Lily Gall (Portland, OR), Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec), Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec), Adrienne Holosko (Windsor, Ontario), Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA), Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand), and Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) each scored once for the Hawks to go along with McKee's five scores. Goalkeeper Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) made seven stops in the 'Wick cage.
Hartwick had a much easier time with Cal San Bernardino in the team's second game. The Hawks jumped out early and led 4-0 over the Coyotes after one period and extended the lead to 9-1 at the half in the win.
Mensink tallied five times in the game to pace Hartwick. Leonard and Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) each registered two goals and Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), Martina Shorkey (Hollywood, FL), Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA), Martinez, Seabourn, and McKee each scored once.
Keepers Dorman and Hayley Cox (El Segundo, CA) combined for 13 saves. Dorman made nine stops, while Cox added four.
The victories today are the second of the season for the Hawks over both the Lancers and the Coyotes. Hartwick downed Cal Baptist 11-10 and Cal San Bernardino 14-10 on February 9.
The Hawks play tomorrow against the host Roadrunners (11 a.m.) and Redlands (4:25 p.m.).
