BABSON PARK, MA - Harwick's men's lacrosse team led host Babson College 6-2 in the second quarter, but the Beavers scored 11 consecutive goals to score a 13-6 victory. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
Hartwick was led by senior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), who scored two goals and dished out two assists. Freshman attack Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) added a goal and an assist, and sophomores Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), and Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied one goal each.
The Beavers, who are coached by former Hartwick player Brendan Gorman, received three goals and two assists from Armand Wilson. Jamie Schmidt added two goals and one helper, and Alex Patinkin contributed two tallies.
After Babson opened the scoring 2:19 in to the first quarter, Hartwick gained the upper hand with Aitchison playing a part in both tallies. He set up Cooper to tie the game and tallied 2:38 later to put the Hawks in front, 2-1.The Beavers evened the score, however, 15 seconds later.
Hughes' fifth tally of the year on an Aitchison feed put Hartwick in front with 2:56 remaining in the first and the Hawks took a one-goal edge into the second. The helper was Aitchison's 56th of his career, giving him sole possession of 10th place in the Hartwick record books.
'Wick out-scored the Beavers 3-0 in the first 14 and a half minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding 6-2 advantage. Aitchison, Schaefer, and Cassidy registered the 'Wick goals. Alex Patinkin's late tally with :18 seconds left, however, gave Babson momentum heading into the second half.
The Beavers scored a pair of goals in the opening 3:13 to pull to within one, 6-5, and Jamie Schmidt evened the game at six with 3:57 left in the quarter. Babson tacked on two more scores in the final minute, including one with eight seconds on the clock to take an 8-6 lead. The hosts finished the third with a 15-2 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in ground balls.
Two goals in the opening minute of the fourth quarter gave Babson a 10-6 lead and two more in a 55-second span made it a six-goal game. Wilson finished off the scoring with his third of the day with under five minutes to play.
The Beavers concluded the match with a 50-31 advantage in shots. They edged the Hawks in ground balls, 35-29, and won 16 of 23 face-offs on the day.
Ryan Dawidjan earned game-highs of nine ground balls and five caused turnovers for Babson. Christian Ebert added four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Cooper and Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) each grabbed five ground balls for 'Wick. Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) contributed four. Tim Antos (Marcellus, NY/Onondaga) forced three Babson turnovers. Hartwick goalkeeper Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made 15 saves.
Hartwick plays at home on Tuesday, March 8 at 4 p.m. against Cobleskill.
