PRINCETON, NJ - No. 14 Hartwick improved to 9-6 on the year with a couple of hard-fought victories on the road on Saturday. The Hawks defeated George Washington, 10-8, in their first match of the day, and defeated 20th ranked Maryland, 10-7. Both games were played at Princeton University's DeNunzio Pool.
The Hawks jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter against the Colonials. GW, however, fought back with four of six goals in the second quarter to tie the game at 6-6 at the half. Hartwick took control with all three third-period goals for a 9-6 edge and the Hawks held on in the fourth quarter for the final 10-8 score line.
Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA), Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA), and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) each scored two goals for Hartwick. The Hawks improved to 6-0 against George Washington all-time.
Against the Terrapins, another strong third quarter set the Hawks up for victory. 'Wick led by a goal after both the 1st quarter (2-1) and the second (5-4) before outscoring Maryland 3-1 in the third for an 8-5 advantage. Both teams scored twice in the fourth period and the Blue and White came away with the victory.
The Hawks are also 6-0 against the Terps since 2001. Both teams battled to overtime last season in the CWPA Eastern quarterfinals before 'Wick emerged with a 13-12 win.
Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) came away with seven saves to earn the win in net. Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec), Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec), and Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) each scored a pair of goals.
The Hawks play tomorrow against the Princeton Tigers beginning at 12:30 p.m.
