Elmira Edges Men’s Tennis 5-4

Mike del Rosario
ELMIRA, NY – Seniors Mike del Rosario (Bloomville, NY/Stamford), Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont), and junior Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) each won singles matches but Hartwick's men's tennis team fell on the road at Elmira College, 5-4, on Sunday.
The host Soaring Eagles led 2-1 after doubles play. In first doubles, Navarro and fellow junior Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional) defeated Elmira's Ryan Patterson and Stefan Waters by a convincing 8-1 margin.
In singles, Navarro, del Rosario, and Barr won in straight sets in second, third, and fourth singles, respectively.
Navarro won in second singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Patterson to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8 this season. Del Rosario defeated Gorav Simlote in the second flight, 6-4, 6-1, to claim his first singles victory of the season. Barr downed Waters, 6-4, 6-1, in fourth singles for his second win of the 2011 campaign.
In first singles, Boyd held a one set to zero advantage after taking the opener against Elmira's Gabe Cortes, 6-3. Cortes would battle back to take the final two sets, 6-2, 7-5, to win the match.
The Soaring Eagle victory snaps a 13-match losing streak against Hartwick dating back to 2001. The Hawks look for their first victory of the season on Tuesday as they travel to Cobleskill.
