IRVINE/LONG BEACH, CA - Hartwick water polo, currently ranked #16 in the latest CWPA national poll, took down 10th ranked Long Beach State, 8-6, on Saturday in the team's final game of its California trip. The Hawks, who fell to #13 Cal Irvine earlier in the day, end their trip with a 7-2 record and are now 21-8 overall.
Against Long Beach, 'Wick outscored its host 2-0 in the final period to emerge with the victory. Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) and Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec) notched the fourth-quarter tallies.
The Hawks and 49ers each scored three times in the opening quarter. Hartwick gained the upper hand in the second as Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) scored the only goal to put her team up at the half, 4-3.
LBS outscored the Hawks 3-2 in the third quarter to even the score at six before 'Wick sealed the win in the fourth. Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA) scored twice to lead Hartwick. Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), and Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) also scored. Goalkeeper Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) made five saves.
Earlier in the day, the Hawks were in Irvine, CA to play the Cal-Irvine Anteaters for the second time this season. In mid-February, UCI came away with a 12-9 win at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
Both teams scored five goals in a wild first quarter. The Eaters, however, netted nine of the final 11 goals the rest of the way to secure the 14-7 victory. UCI would score three times in each of the final three quarters while 'Wick only mustered one tally in the second and one in the fourth.
Capparelli scored twice for Hartwick. Analytis, McKee, Leonard, Lily Gall (Portland, OR), and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) contributed one goal apiece. Dorman made 11 blocks in goal.
Hartwick returns home and plays in a pair of critical CWPA Western Division games at Bucknell University on April 9. The Hawks take on #7 Michigan and #12 Indiana.
