Alfred Tops Men’s Tennis, 6-3

DELHI, NY – Hartwick men's tennis fell short of its third straight victory on Friday with a 6-3 loss to Alfred University in a match played at SUNY Delhi. The Hawks fall to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8. The Saxons are now 5-7 and 2-5.
Juniors Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) and Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional) teamed up for an 8-5 victory in first doubles over Alfred's Nicholas Schneider and Peter Benoit. It was the lone doubles win as the Hawks trailed 2-1 heading into singles play. Barr and Mike del Rosario (Bloomville, NY/Stamford Central) were close to victory in second doubles but fell, 9-7.
Boyd and senior Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) scored wins for the Hawks in first and fourth singles, respectively. Boyd defeated Alfred's Connor Houghton in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to earn his fourth victory of the year. Barr improved to 5-4 with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Nathan Kucko.
Junior Bobby Amberson (Raeford, NC/Middletown) was denied a win in fifth singles in a marathon match with Stefan Nonnenmann. Amberson dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-4) before taking the second set, 7-6 (9-7). Nonnemann, however, would close out the match in the final set, 7-5.
Hartwick returns to action on Saturday, April 30 at home against RIT. The match begins at 12 p.m.
