Water Polo Comes Up Short Against Indiana in Eastern Semis, 10-9

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Nationally 12th ranked Hartwick battled back from a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit but fell a goal short to host Indiana, 10-9, in the CWPA Eastern semifinals on Saturday at IU's Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The loss marks the second straight season the Hoosiers have knocked the Hawks out in the semifinal round.

Juniors Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec), Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) each scored two goals to lead Hartwick. Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec), and Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) each scored once.

Jakie Kohli led the Hoosiers with six goals. Kara Butler added two and keeper Cassie Wycoff made 10 saves.

Mensink broke the ice for the Hawks 25 seconds into the contest to give 'Wick the early lead. Just 13 seconds later, IU evened the score on a Lauren Wycoff tally, but Leonard answered with 4:54 remaining in the quarter on the man-advantage.

Indiana would grab the lead as Kohli tallied and Kara Butler followed 52 seconds later and the Hoosiers led 3-2 after one period.

The Hawks outscored IU 2-1 in the second quarter to tie the score at the half, 4-4. Leonard tallied to tie it at 3-3 and after the Hoosiers took a 4-3 edge, Freeborn scored for the first of her two goals on the day to close out the half.

In the second half, Kohli and Freeborn exchanged goals before the Hoosiers would score the game's next four goals to take a 9-5 lead. Kohli scored twice in the span with Butler and Shae Fournier adding goals for IU. Analytis pulled Hartwick to within three, only to have the hosts counter for their final goal to make the score 10-6.

Trailing by four, the Hawks mounted a quick comeback. Bass and Analytis scored 20 seconds apart and Mensink followed with a goal with 4:28 remaining in the game to trim the deficit to one, 10-9.

The Hawks, however, could get no closer as Wycoff made four saves on 'Wick shots in the closing stages of the game. Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) kept Hartwick within striking distance as she turned away two Hoosier efforts in the same span. She finished the game making 11 saves.

The Hawks, who also lost an 8-7 decision in the semis last season to IU, fall to 7-7 all-time against Hoosiers. 'Wick will look to close out its season with a win tomorrow in the third place match against #19 Maryland at 1:30 p.m. The Hawks edged the Terps 13-12 in overtime in last season's Eastern quarterfinals. 'Wick also defeated Maryland 10-7 earlier this year and holds a 7-0 all-time series lead.
