Men’s Tennis Drops Match to RPI

TROY, NY – Senior Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) and junior Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) each won singles matches but it wasn't enough as Hartwick's men's tennis team fell on the road at RPI, 7-2. The Hawks are now 0-2 on the season. The Engineers improve to 5-5 overall.
The hosts took all three doubles matches to start the afternoon with a 3-0 lead. RPI then won four of six singles matches, including a pair that went to the deciding set to claim the win.
Navarro won in second singles in straight sets to stay unbeaten at 2-0. He downed RPI's Andre Vorbrodt, 6-3, 6-1. Barr won his third singles match in straight sets as well. He knocked off Kyle Borton, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Michael del Rosario (Bloomville, NY/Stamford Central) and Bobby Amberson (Raeford, NC/Middletown) nearly earned victories for the Hawks in their respective singles matches. Del Rosario took the first set, 6-4, against James Kim in fourth singles. Kim, however, gutted out the second set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-5), and he won the super tie-breaker to 10 by a final count of 10-5. Amberson also won the first set in his match in fifth singles, 7-6 (7-5). His opponent, Andrew Snyder, rallied to take the final two sets, 6-4, 10-5.
The Hawks open up Empire 8 play this weekend. The Hawks play at St. John Fisher on Saturday and Nazareth on Sunday.
