Hawks Split Against #6 Michigan, #12 Indiana in CWPA Western Division Play

LEWISBURG, PA - Hartwick's nationally 14th ranked women's water polo team fell a goal short, 8-7, against #6 Michigan, but rebounded to knock off #12 Indiana, 8-5, on Saturday in Lewisburg, PA. The Hawks are now 22-9 on the season and 3-1 in CWPA West.

Hartwick goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) starred on the day making 33 saves in the two games. Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) led the Hawks offensively with four tallies.

In the Hawks' first game, 'Wick battled back from a 6-3 deficit in the third quarter and tied the score at 7-7 with 6:18 to go in the game on a Charlotte Mensink (Nijverdal, Netherlands) goal. The Wolverines, however, would net the game-winner by Kiki Golden with just 33 seconds remaining in the game on a 6-on-5 advantage.

Both teams score one goal apiece in the first period before Hartwick twice gained the upper hand in the second quarter. Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec) gave 'Wick a 2-1 edge, and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) made it 3-2 later in the period.

Michigan would score twice in the final 56 seconds of the half to take the lead, 4-3. Two more goals in the opening 2:02 of the third made it 6-3 Wolverines, but Jessica McKee (Tustin, CA), Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec), and Bass each scored in the final 4:18 to even the score at 6-6 entering the fourth.

The Wolverines, who briefly took the lead again in the fourth before Mensink evened the score, were led by Golden's five goals. Bass led 'Wick with two goals and Dorman stopped 16 Michigan shots.

Later in the day, the Hawks got a bit of revenge on Indiana after the Hoosiers knocked them out in the CWPA semifinals last season. After the Hoosiers took a 2-1 lead after one period, the Hawks dominated the second scoring all four of the period's goals. IU cut the lead to two, 6-4, at the end of three but Hartwick closed out the win scoring two goals to the Hoosiers' one in the final quarter.

Dorman (pictured) allowed just five goals while making 17 saves in the contest. The all-time Hartwick leader in saves, Dorman now has 1,378 blocks in her four-year career.

Bass, Mensink, and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) each scored two for the Hawks. Analytis and Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) added one apiece.

The Hawks have three more games on their regular season docket. 'Wick travels back to Lewisburg on April 17 to play Bucknell in their final CWPA Western game. The team then hosts Marist and Siena on April 20 before opening up the CWPA Eastern playoffs in Bloomington, IN on April 29.
