SCHENECTADY, NY - The Hartwick volleyball team traveled to Union College and played two matches on Friday night at the Union Tournament, losing to the host Dutchwomen and defeating Utica.
'Wick battled the host Dutchwomen in the first match and fell 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 18-25). Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) contributed seven kills and six digs. Britney Linter (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Selkirk) and Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) both had 11 assists each.
Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) led the team with 18 digs while Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) tallied 11 digs. At the net, Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) notched five blocks.
The Hawks won their second match of the day against Utica 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 25-9). Desmond led in kills with nine and also had seven service aces. McGee was the leader in assists with 20 and also chipped in five digs, while Mausert and Eckert had eight and seven digs, respectively.
In the second set, Hartwick trailed 21-24 and came back to win with six great serves from Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist). The Hawks got on a huge run in the third set with Mausert and Desmond contributing both offensively and defensively.
Hartwick (4-7) continues play tomorrow against Skidmore at 10 am and then SUNY Cortland at 2 pm.
