Box Score

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College's football team scored first and took a 7-0 lead into halftime, but visiting Alfred rallied for 30 straight second-half points in a 30-13 win over the Hawks at Wright Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 'Wick ends its season with a record of 3-7. The Saxons improve to 6-3.

Quarterbacks Keegan Corbett (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) and Andrew Bashford (East Rockaway, NY/E. Rockaway HS) combined for 234 yards and two scores to lead the Hartwick offense. Corbett completed 9-of-19 passes for a team-high 150 yards and one touchdown pass. Bashford added 84 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-11 passing.

Nick Knauer (Wynantskill, NY/Tamarac) made six catches for 53 yards and a score. John Horner (Bedford Hills, NY/Fox Lane) added three receptions for 45 yards and one TD and Chris Hoose (Leeds, NY/Cairo-Durham) accumulated 67 yards on two catches.

Mike Parody (Clay, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) and Jim DeRosa (Centereach, NY/Centereach) tied for a game-high with eight tackles apiece. Coleman Jennes (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) added two sacks.

The Hartwick defense held off the Saxons on the scoreboard and limited them to 129 yards of offense in the first half. The Hawks also sacked AU quarterback Joe Enslin four times.

In the second half, Alfred made the adjustment to the Wildcat offense and subsequently racked up 249 yards on the ground and scored touchdowns on four of five possessions to pull away. Maleke Fuentes did much of the damage for the Saxons with 143 yards on 23 carries with four touchdowns. Demetrious Houanche also rushed for 89 yards.

Hartwick broke the ice with 1:35 remaining in the opening quarter on a three-play drive which started on its own 20. Following a one-yard rush, Corbett hit Hoose who accumulated 40 yards after the catch, making it to the Alfred 17 yard-line for a 62-yard gain. On the next play, Corbett found Horner in the end zone to break the 0-0 deadlock. Alex Tesoriero (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) contributed the PAT for the Hartwick 7-0 lead.

The Hawks stopped the Saxons and forced a punt but couldn't cash in on their next possession. 'Wick drove to the Alfred 45 but an 11-yard sack would lead to a Hawks' punt.

AU drove into 'Wick territory with an 11-play, 42-yard drive making it to the Hawks' 43 but Jared Morrow (Ogdensburg, NY/OFA) picked off Enslin to give the ball back to Hartwick.

Later in the quarter the Saxons drove to the Hartwick 27 and looked poised to put their first points on the board. However, Jennes registered a huge hit on Enslin on first down and then sacked him on both second and third down to force a 4th and 18 from the 'Wick 35. A pass attempt on fourth down failed and the Hawks had one final possession in the half with 50 seconds to go.

Corbett and Knauer drove the ball down the field with three straight completions of 15, 10, and eight yards to get to the AU 32. After two straight incompletions, Tesoriero attempted a 44-yard field goal with two ticks left but his effort sailed slightly left of the upright and the Hawks maintained a 7-point edge at the break.

Both teams punted on their first possession of the second half before AU would knot the score. The Saxons got the ball in good field position on the 'Wick 42 and Fuentes, who rushed four times for 24 yards on the drive, scored from a yard out. Zach Tavolaro's PAT evened the game at 7-7.

Hartwick's 2nd drive of the half started well with a Bashford to Ryan Manning (Watervliet, NY/Watervliet) 26-yard passing play. However, a holding penalty and a sack on Corbett would force a Hartwick punt.

The following Saxons' drive into the fourth quarter resulted in seven points and would put them up to stay. Houanche broke free for a huge 42-yard gain putting his team into 'Wick territory. A Fuentes 16-yard rush got AU closer and he capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run with 13:05 left in the game.

A three-and-out gave the ball back to the visitors and they would cash in another seven points. A 36-yard Jon Jackson run set up Fuentes for an eight-yard score and the lead grew to 14 points, 21-7.

On the Hawks' third drive of the fourth quarter, Alfred's defense got two more points. Corbett scrambled from his own 14 yard-line and defensive tackle Mike Raplee caught him just inside the goal line. Corbett tried to get rid of the ball but he was whistled for the intentional grounding in the end zone resulting in a safety and the AU lead was increased to 23-7.

Following the kickoff, Fuentes would break free on a 4th and 3 for a 22-yard touchdown on the sixth play from scrimmage. Tavolaro's extra point closed out the AU scoring at 30.

Bashford would lead the Hawks down the field for a touchdown after the ensuing kickoff. On a 3rd and 26, he found Molina for 13 yards and then connected with Rocky Dinga (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) for 25 yards on 4th and 13 to keep the drive alive. Three plays later, a 10-yard touchdown pass to Knauer capped the 9-play, 63-yard drive with 10 seconds remaining.

The Saxons finished the game with 384 yards of offense while the Hawks gained 234, all in the air.

Morrow ended the game with six tackles for Hartwick. Joe Seney (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) added five hits and Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon), Dalton Smith (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), and Clyde Miller (Rochester, NY/Glenville State College) each made four tackles. Schweitzer also forced a fumble giving him six in his career. He now is tied for third with Joe Flaherty (2003-07) in Hartwick history in the category.

Prior to the game, Hartwick recognized the 13 members of the Class of 2013. DeRosa, Jennes, Smith, Justin Hinton (Hempstead, NY/Hempstead), Tom Holmgren (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg), Pete Jackson (Groton, NY/Groton), Jason Krug (Highland, NY/Highland), Mike Mathews (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane), Alex O'Brien (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia), Chris Okonski (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), Anthony Ponesse (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill), K.J.
