WESTON, MA- The Hartwick men's basketball team withstood a late rally by host Regis to hang on and win the consolation game of the Regis College Tip-Off Tournament 70-67 on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks even their record at 1-1 while the Pride fall to 0-2.
The Hawks were led by
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) who scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added five rebounds.
Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) had 10 points while shooting 3-for-7 from the floor.
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) both chipped in eight points each.
Ryan Chambers was one of four Pride players to score in double figures as he had 16 points. Carlos Bermudez-Glean had 15 points, seven steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Ahmad Charles contributed 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jordan Monts added 11 points.
The Pride defense had 17 steals and forced 29 Hawk turnovers on the day. 'Wick had the edge in rebounds, 30-23. From the floor, Hartwick shot nearly 53% to Regis' 42%.
“We figured out a way to win the game without playing our best,” said head coach
Todd McGuinness following the game. “We need to find a way to take care of the ball or it will be a long season for us.”
The opening minutes of the first half saw both teams exchange baskets as Hartwick held a slight lead. A 14-5 Hawk run gave Hartwick its biggest lead of the half, 25-14, with 6:47 remaining. Regis, however, would close out the first period on a 16-10 run to close the deficit to 35-30 where the score stood at halftime.
'Wick opened up a 19-8 run to begin the second half that ended with a three-point field goal from Geisser that gave Hartwick a 54-38 lead with 11:11 showing on the clock. The Hawks were poised to run away with the game and still led 60-46 at 7:18 following two free throw shots from
Aaron Laing (Laurens, NY/Laurens).
Regis would make its way back into the contest as a 14-7 run, aided by six Hawk turnovers, made it 67-60 Hartwick with just over two minutes left to play in the game. Following an exchange of free throws, Charles hit a jumper in the paint to get the Pride to within six points of tying the game, 69-63, with 21 seconds left.
After a Bradley turnover and subsequent steal by Chambers, Chambers would be fouled by
Christian Laputka (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area) and sank two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to make it 69-65. Chambers then fouled
Glenn Gavan (Newton, NY/Pope John XXIII) who made one of two free throws to make it 70-65 with 18 ticks on the game clock. Charles netted a layup with three seconds remaining but it was too late as Hartwick held on for the win.
The Hawks will next face Union on Tuesday night in the team's home opener at Lambros Arena. Game time will be at 8 p.m.
