Water Polo Splits First Two Games at Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, CA- The #15 ranked Hartwick women's water polo played two matches at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. In the first match of the day, the Hawks lost a close decision to # 19 Cal-State Northridge, 10-8. They then downed Sonoma State, 14-8, in the second match.

Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) led the Hawks with three goals. Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) had two. Sami Capparelli (Miami FL), Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), and Alyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) all had one goal each.

Marisa Young led the Matadors with four goals. Melissa Doll and Jenny Jamison had two each. Lindsy Nelson and Heidi Pettinger scored one goal each.

The Matadors scored the game's first two goals in the first quarter but the Hawks would score three straight in the second to take a 3-2 lead. After an exchange of goals, the game was tied 4-4 heading into the third quarter.

Kosich's score to begin the third frame would put 'Wick in front but Cal-State Northridge would tie it up. The Matadors would go on to score twice more to go on top 7-5 before Freeborn hit the back of the net to make it a one-goal game going into the final quarter.

In the final stanza, the Matadors held a two-goal advantage with 6:23 remaining to play. Analytis scored with 6:11 left to make it a one-goal deficit for Hartwick. The Matadors would score to retain the two-goal lead and held on in the end for the win.

In the second game of the day, Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) paced the Hawks with five goals. Capparelli, Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) all had two goals. Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) scored one goal.

Lexi Morabito led the Seawolves with two goals. Adrienne Bishart, Laura Kunz, Natalie Del Carlo, Nicole Browning, Caitlin Risden, and Lindsay Rangel all had one goal each.

Bass' first two goals of the game gave Hartwick the early 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Sonoma State would score twice but the Hawks would hold a 6-2 lead after one period of play.

'Wick led 8-2 after the second quarter. The Hawks would lead by as much as 14-5 with 2:47 left to play in the fourth quarter. The Seawolves scored three straight times to close out the game.

Hartwick is now 3-3 overall. They will play #14 Long Beach State tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. PST (3 p.m. EST).
