Water Polo Takes Ninth Place at Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, CA - The Hartwick women's water polo team competed on the second day of the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon. In the first match of the day, Jemma Dendy Young's (Cape Town, South Africa) goal with 32 seconds remaining helped lift the Hawks to a 8-7 victory over #15 Long Beach State University. In the second match, the Hawks held off Cal State Bakersfield 11-9.

Alyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) had two goals to lead the Hawks. Dendy Young, Shannon Leonard (Pointe Claire, Quebec), Lisa Bass (Montreal Quebec), Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan), and Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) all had one goal each.

Heather McKeon led the 49ers with three goals. Coriann Snyder scored twice and both Chelsea Parks and Justine Morgan both had one score each.

'Wick got off to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter before the 49ers would tack on one score with 28 second remaining. The Hawks would retain their three-goal lead in the second quarter when Analytis found the back of the net with just 14 seconds to play in the quarter.

Freeborn's goal at 5:41 of the third put Hartwick up 5-1. Following a 49er goal and a Bass score, Long Beach State added two score to make it a 6-4 heading into the final period of play.

It was 7-6 Hartwick in the fourth following a goal by Long Beach State's Snyder with 4:48 remaining. McKeon's goal at 1:42 evened the game at 7-all. With time winding down, Dendy Young found pay dirt with a goal and the Hawks held on in the end for the victory.

In the second game, Bass scored four goals to lead Hartwick. Freeborn and Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) both scored two goals. Leonard, Analytis, and Dendy Young all had one goal each.

Jessica Browning scored four times to pace the Roadrunners. Shannon McKenzie scored three times. Janelle Shelby and Taylor Hanson both had one score each.

Bass' first two goals of the game put Hartwick on top 2-0. The Roadrunners would get on the board with a goal at 4:56 but the Hawks would three more to close out the first quarter up 4-1.

Bass' third goal of the contest with two seconds remaining in the second quarter gave 'Wick a 7-3 advantage. The Roadrunners would close the deficit in the third with three goals to get within one goal of tying the game before Freeborn found the back of the net to give the Hawks a two-goal advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth, Cal State Bakersfield would twice get to within one goal of tying the game and both times Hartwick would score to keep its lead at two. Bass' fourth goal of the game with just over one minute left to play put the Hawks ahead 11-8. The Roadrunners would score one more time with 42 seconds left but Hartwick would hold on in the end for the victory.

Hartwick returns to the east coast to compete in the Bison Invite hosted by Bucknell University next weekend. The Hawks will go against Wagner at 9:30 a.m. and Marist at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the Hawks will face Siena at 12:30 p.m. followed by the host Bisons at 6:30 p.m.
