TROY, NY - Hartwick's 16th ranked water polo team opened up CWPA Western Division play on Saturday at RPI's Robison Pool with a 13-7 loss to #11 Indiana University. The Hawks would rebound later in the morning with a 14-6 victory over Marist College.
The Hawks are now 11-4 overall with one game remaining in the day. 'Wick will oppose #13 Maryland at 3:30 p.m. The Hoosiers improve to 9-3.
The first game of the day was a rematch of last season's CWPA Eastern semifinals, which the Hoosiers took 10-9 en route to the title. Goals by Summer Creighton and Shelby Taylor gave IU the lead less than four minutes into the first quarter.
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), who led all scorers with four goals, answered for the Hawks with her first of the day. Hanna Eimstad, however, made it a two-goal game again 15 seconds later. Kosich and Indiana's Meghan Lappan traded goals in the final 1:25 and the Hoosiers led 4-2 after one.
Kym King, Creighton, and Lappan each tallied in the second quarter as the Hoosiers opened up a 7-2 lead. Shannon Leonard (Pointe Claire, Quebec) got one back for the Hawks with 2:29 left in the half and IU took a 7-3 advantage into the intermission.
Three goals in the first six minutes of the third built the Indiana lead to 10-3. Kosich tacked on her third tally of the game for the Hawks and they trailed by six entering the final period.
After an early IU goal in the fourth, the Hawks closed out the match with three of the game's final four goals. Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) tallied with just under seven minutes remaining. Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) and Kosich ended the scoring with two scores in a 1:30 span.
Hayley Cox (El Segundo, CA) stopped 10 shots in 24 minutes of action. Guia Corlini (Camoglia, Italy) made one save in the opening eight minutes.
Hartwick took out the Red Foxes in its second game by outscoring them 9-2 over the final two periods. The Hawks held a 3-0 lead at the end of one quarter thanks to two tallies from freshman Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and one from Kosich. Marist would outscore the Hawks 4-2 in the second quarter to shave the lead to one at halftime, 5-4.
The Red Foxes tied it 46 seconds into the third quarter but two straight goals from Zakirova put the Hawks up to stay. Marist pulled to within one, 7-6, but Analytis and Leonard added two more tallies for 'Wick for a 9-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA), Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA), and Capparelli each scored for Hartwick in the first 3:35 of the fourth. Zakirova closed out the day with two goals for a total of six in the victory for the Hawks.
Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) recorded four assists for 'Wick. Leonard recorded two.
