Water Polo Defeats St. Francis and Iona

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The women's water polo team picked up two more wins on the day as they defeated St. Francis 19-4 and Iona 15-9 on Saturday night at the Marist Invite.

Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) led the Hawks against St. Francis with four goals. Megan Clampitt (Huntley, IL) had three goals. Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) all scored twice. Shannon Leonard (Ponte Clair, Quebec), Lily Gall (Portland, OR), Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa), Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), Anna Zdolsek (Linkoping, Sweden), and Kanani Mazzone (Kalopei, HI) all had one goal each.

Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) stopped six shots in goal.

Hartwick had a 7-0 after the first quarter of play and led by as much as 17-2 in the fourth quarter as the Hawks cruised to the victory.

Against Iona, Leonard and Freeborn both had three goals each. Lisa Bass (Montreal Quebec) and Alyssa  Analytis (Montreal, Quebec) both scored twice. Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan), Martinez, Kosich, Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA) all scored once.

Hartwick scored first to go up 1-0 in the first quarter but Iona would score two straight goals to go up 2-1 after one period of play.

Goals by Freeborn and Martinez gave Hartwick the lead back in the second quarter but the Gaels would again tie the game.  The teams would exchange goals until Kosich would give Hartwick the 5-4 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the second.

Two Hartwick goals 24 seconds apart would increase the Hawks lead to 7-4 at 7:10 of the third quarter.  Iona would narrow the gap to one.  The Hawks would hold a 11-9 going into the fourth quarter of play.

It would be all Hartwick in the fourth quarter as 'Wick scored four straight times to  pull away for the victory.

The Hawks are now 13-5 and will conclude the Marist Invite tomorrow with three games.  Hartwick will face Michigan at 9:15 a.m., Notre Dame College at 11:45 a.m. , and wrap up with Villanova at 4:45 p.m.
